One Thing I Know

With the world around us in a bit of a blender and so much fluid change happening on a daily basis, I was reminded recently that it is good for us to check in with ourselves regularly and focus on the things that we know to be true.

The other day I was at work and after about 6 hours of non-stop Zoom sessions, I decided to step outside the office for a quick walk. After all, there’s only so much that a person can put up with. I tried to leave everything behind, even including my cell phone, to just find ten minutes to escape the noise and reset. As I walked, I said a quick prayer in my mind asking for help to process everything that was coming at me professionally and personally. That prayer helped to settle my thoughts and eventually my mind for some reason turned to the story of Jesus giving sight to the man born blind found in the book of John Chapter 9. You might remember this one, where Jesus made clay from the dirt and “anointed the eyes of the blind man”. I love how the scriptures say the blind man “went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing”. The Pharisees heard about the miracle and immediately launched into accusations against the Savior. After several rounds of questioning about what happened, the man said this in verse 25, “Whether he (Jesus) be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.”

In that moment of pondering and seeking clarity and calm, my mind latched onto that lesson. The man knew one thing. Before Jesus, he was blind and had always been blind. After Jesus, he could see. As I walked and thought about this story, my mind made the natural connection and I found myself asking “What is one thing that you know?” With that question, I was instantly reminded of a few miraculous moments from my own life where the story of my life was changed by the touch of the Master’s hand. In that moment, things became clear again “and there was a great calm”.

Now, don’t get me wrong here. There is a lot that I do not know. In fact, I am not sure if I am the only one who feels like this but the older I get, it feels like the less I actually know. But I can say, as the blind man says, one thing I know. Because of the Savior, I was spiritually blind and now I see. Because of the Savior, I was lost and now I am found. I was unknown and forgotten and now, because of the Savior, I am known, remembered, and I matter.

The world and its commotion is intentionally designed to make us forget. Peace may be taken from the earth but we have every right to feel personal peace as we strive to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. May we prayerfully find ways to intentionally slow down and do the work to remember so that we might never forget the things we know. May we do whatever is required for us to cross the bridge from knowing about Him to knowing Him...knowing Him as our Savior, our only hope, and our Friend. I testify that His is the power to miraculously heal, to cleanse, and to save. His grace is sufficient. I leave these things with you all in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Una cosa que sé"

Con el mundo que nos rodea en un poco de mezcla y tantos cambios fluidos sucediendo a diario, recientemente se me recordó que es bueno para nosotros controlarnos con regularidad y enfocarnos en las cosas que sabemos que son ciertas.

El otro día estaba en el trabajo y después de unas 6 horas de sesiones de Zoom ininterrumpidas, decidí salir de la oficina para dar un paseo rápido. Después de todo, hay mucho que una persona puede soportar. Traté de dejar todo atrás, incluso mi teléfono celular, para encontrar diez minutos para escapar del ruido y reiniciar. Mientras caminaba, dije una oración rápida en mi mente pidiendo ayuda para procesar todo lo que se me avecinaba profesional y personalmente. Esa oración ayudó a calmar mis pensamientos y finalmente mi mente, por alguna razón, se dirigió a la historia de Jesús dándole la vista al ciego de nacimiento que se encuentra en el libro de Juan Capítulo 9. Tal vez recuerdes esta, donde Jesús hizo barro de la tierra y “Ungió los ojos del ciego”. Me encanta cómo las Escrituras dicen que el ciego "se fue, pues, y se lavó, y vino viendo". Los fariseos se enteraron del milagro e inmediatamente lanzaron acusaciones contra el Salvador. Después de varias rondas de preguntas sobre lo que sucedió, el hombre dijo esto en el versículo 25: "Si él (Jesús) es un pecador o no, no lo sé: una cosa sé, que mientras era ciego, ahora veo".

En ese momento de reflexión y búsqueda de claridad y calma, mi mente se aferró a esa lección. El hombre sabía una cosa. Antes de Jesús, él era ciego y siempre había sido ciego. Después de Jesús, pudo ver. Mientras caminaba y pensaba en esta historia, mi mente hizo la conexión natural y me encontré preguntando "¿Qué es una cosa que sabes?" Con esa pregunta, recordé instantáneamente algunos momentos milagrosos de mi propia vida donde la historia de mi vida cambió con el toque de la mano del Maestro. En ese momento, las cosas volvieron a aclararse “y hubo una gran calma”.

Ahora, no me malinterpretes aquí. Hay muchas cosas que no sé. De hecho, no estoy seguro de si soy el único que se siente así, pero cuanto mayor me hago, parece que menos sé. Pero puedo decir, como dice el ciego, una cosa que sé. Gracias al Salvador, estaba espiritualmente ciego y ahora veo. Debido al Salvador, estaba perdido y ahora soy encontrado. Fui desconocido y olvidado y ahora, gracias al Salvador, soy conocido, recordado e importo.

El mundo y su conmoción están diseñados intencionalmente para hacernos olvidar. La paz puede ser quitada de la tierra, pero tenemos todo el derecho a sentir paz personal mientras nos esforzamos por vivir el evangelio de Jesucristo. Ojalá que encontremos en oración formas de reducir la velocidad intencionalmente y hacer el trabajo de recordar para que nunca olvidemos las cosas que sabemos. Que podamos hacer lo que sea necesario para cruzar el puente de conocerlo a Él a conocerlo ... conocerlo como nuestro Salvador, nuestra única esperanza y nuestro Amigo. Testifico que Él es el poder de sanar, limpiar y salvar milagrosamente. Su gracia es suficiente. Dejo estas cosas con todos ustedes en el nombre de Jesucristo. Amén.
